How to find yourself under the mess of proscrastination
2+ hour, 21+ min ago (975+ words) Most of us don't set out to make a mess of things. Life gets full, days get crowded and we tell ourselves we'll deal with that one small thing tomorrow. If we're honest, most messes don't begin with big decisions " they begin with the tiny avoidances we think won't matter. But they do. They always do. And when the mess finally becomes visible, many people interpret it as failure. Let me offer a different view: Messes aren't failures " they're invitations. Messes are signals that we've drifted off our path and an opportunity to return to ourselves more fully. To illustrate this, let me tell you about someone I'll call Alex " a person you may recognize in yourself, your partner or someone you love. Alex is responsible, competent, and caring " someone who juggles work, family and community obligations always trying to…...
John Seiler: Celebrating 30 years of Antiwar.com as the war machine rages on
3+ hour, 21+ min ago (468+ words) One of America's national treasures, Antiwar.com, turns 30 on Dec. 9. It was started in 1995 by libertarians Justin Raimondo, a prolific polemicist who died in 2019, and editor Eric Garris, with occasional pieces turning into daily updates in April 1998. I talked with Garris, 72, a Southern California native. He lived the past 50 years in San Francisco, but last summer moved to Florida. The 9/11 attacks of 2001 ramped up the mission of Antiwar.com. The attacks led to the disastrous Afghanistan and Iraq wars, the latter based on the Bush administration's lies about Iraq wielding "weapons of mass destruction." The Orange County Register was the biggest paper in the country opposing those wars. I was an editorial writer at the Register during this time, though most of our editorials on foreign policy were written by Senior Columnist Alan Bock. Under the heading "Eye on the…...
National Park Service drops free admission on MLK Day, Juneteenth while adding Trump's birthday
4+ hour, 5+ min ago (510+ words) WASHINGTON -- The National Park Service will offer free admission to U.S. residents on President Donald Trump's birthday next year -- which also happens to be Flag Day -- but is eliminating the benefit for Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Juneteenth. The new list of free admission days for Americans is the latest example of the Trump administration downplaying America's civil rights history while also promoting the president's image, name and legacy. Last year, the list of free days included Martin Luther King Jr Day and Juneteenth -- which is June 19 -- but not June 14, Trump's birthday. The new free-admission policy takes effect Jan. 1 and was one of several changes announced by the Park Service late last month, including higher admission fees for international visitors. The other days of free park admission in 2026 are Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Constitution Day, Veterans Day, President…...
Commentary: She's a liar, swindler and cheat. So why wouldn't Trump pardon her?
4+ hour, 22+ min ago (1273+ words) For a while, it seemed Elizabeth Holmes was everywhere. Peering wide-eyed and black-turtlenecked from a shelf load of magazine covers. Honored as a "Woman of the Year" by Glamour. Touted as one of Time's "100 Most Influential People." At age 30, Holmes was regarded as a preternatural business talent " and, more impressively, described as the youngest self-made female billionaire in history " owing to her founding and stewardship of Theranos, a Silicon Valley start-up that promised to revolutionize healthcare by diagnosing a host of maladies with just a pinprick's worth of blood. It was all a big con job. Her medical claims were a sham. Theranos' technology was bogus. Even the husky TED-talking voice Holmes used to invest herself with greater seriousness and authority was a put-on. (The turtlenecks were an austere affectation she cribbed from Steve Jobs.) In January 2022, a San Jose…...
Commentary: Is RFK Jr. better on women's health than Newsom? We're about to find out
4+ hour, 22+ min ago (1503+ words) It's a bad look when Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is ahead of you on scientifically sound health policy " women's health, to make matters worse " but that's exactly what happened to Gov. Gavin Newsom last week. In a Cabinet meeting, Kennedy went on a six-minute-plus grovel to Trump. That's pretty standard for these increasingly weird meetings, but the secretary of Health and Human Services specifically praised the president for ending a "20-year war on women by removing the black box warnings from hormone replacement therapy." As much as it shocks me to say it, RFK Jr. has a reasonable point. A couple of days later, appearing onstage at the New York Times' DealBook Summit, Oscar-winning actor Halle Berry took an unexpected and harsh shot at Newsom for vetoing a bill on menopause treatment. "But that's OK," she said of Newsom killing the…...
Pacific Palisades residents preserve community with block party
4+ hour, 22+ min ago (722+ words) At the block party on Duende Lane, Elissa Atwood was delighted Saturday morning to greet neighbors she hadn't seen in months, hoping their reconnection would help preserve the sense of community that was so shaken by the Palisades fire. She is a third-generation Palisadian whose home, built by her grandfather in 1953, was threatened by the flames. Several of her immediate neighbors' lost their homes. Atwood's daughter was pregnant during the disaster, and her granddaughter is the fifth generation of the family to live in that home. The party, organized by the Marquez Knolls Property Owners Assn., was the neighborhood's only gathering of the year " music playing from a speaker, Pueblano-style tacos sizzling on the grill, dogs happily roaming around. Many residents say it has been difficult to get in touch with their neighbors, some of whom have left or are…...

4+ hour, 55+ min ago (117+ words) TORRANCE, Calif. (KABC) -- A man is in custody after riding a minibike inside the Del Amo Fashion Center in Torrance and allegedly trying to hit a security officer. Police say it happened in late October when 21-year-old Romio Dontee Michael rode the gas-powered minibike through the busy food court and even into some stores. Torrance police say after mall security was contacted, Michael attempted to his a security officer with the minibike. He's facing a charge of assault with a deadly weapon for allegedly trying to hit the officer. Police served a search warrant at Michael's North Hollywood home and arrested him on Wednesday. 5+ hour, 16+ min ago (584+ words) LOS ANGELES " The Kings were in the mood to buck trends on Saturday night at Crypto.com Arena, where they scalped the Chicago Blackhawks, 6-0. Brandt Clarke scored two goals and was joined in the multipoint club by Mikey Anderson (goal, assist), Drew Doughty (two assists) and Alex Turcotte (goal, assist). Warren Foegele and Andrei Kuzmenko also lit the lamp. Darcy Kuemper earned his second shutout of the year, stopping 23 shots. Chicago's Spencer Knight endured the evening in net, making 26 saves. Canadian kids have sick burns for Freddie Freeman after World Series in hilarious charity video
7+ hour, 22+ min ago (146+ words) Dodger star Freddie Freeman is trying to bring some holiday cheer to children in his native country of Canada. But, it seems like the Dodgers' 2025 World Series win is still a touchy subject. Actor Ryan Reynolds posted his annual holiday video on social media to raise money for Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto, which featured Freddie Freeman and some rather unenthused children. "Go back to your sunshine and traffic, you hoser," one child yelled at Freeman. The video ended with the kids chanting, "Let's go Blue Jays," of course. "I asked him [to be in the video] in March, what are the odds?" Reynolds joked. As part of his fundraiser, Reynolds says all donations before Dec. 24 will be matched up…...
