TSA renews push to end collective bargaining agreement for airport security screeners
48+ min ago (497+ words) The Transportation Security Administration is renewing Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem's push to end a collective bargaining agreement with airport screening officers " the second such attempt this year and one that comes just a month after the longest government shutdown on record. The agency said Friday the move is based on a September memo from Noem that says TSA screeners "have a primary function of national security" and therefore should not engage in collective bargaining or be represented by a union. The American Federation of Government Employees swiftly vowed to fight the decision, calling it illegal and a violation of a federal judge's preliminary injunction issued in June that blocked Noem's first attempt to terminate the contract representing 47,000 workers. Emailed requests for comment were sent to TSA and Homeland Security. TSA said it plans to rescind the current seven-year contract…...

The LAPD Academy graduated 24 new officers Friday morning, but it's just a fraction of what L.A. Mayor Karen Bass says the city needs. The L.A. City Council met Friday following an urgent request for more funding and voted 13-2 to fund the department through January. This week, the mayor wrote a letter to the City Council requesting the approval of $4.4 million in funding for the LAPD for additional new police recruits beyond 240 officers that were authorized earlier in the year. While some council members expressed a willingness to support this effort, there are also concerns about how and where the money will come from. City officials have…...

1+ hour, 23+ min ago (689+ words) EL SEGUNDO " Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert was listed as a limited participant in the team's practices on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, but they dropped him from their final injury report of the week, which means he's good to go for Sunday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium. As if there were any doubt, right? Herbert has played all but four games since assuming the Chargers' starting quarterback role in Week 2 of his rookie season in 2020. The only reason he didn't play in those four games in 2023 was because he was physically unable to do so after suffering a season-ending finger injury. He simply couldn't control the ball or he might have played. So, surgery on Dec. 1 on his fractured left, non-throwing hand suffered one day earlier in the first quarter of the Chargers' victory over the Las…...
